Catch Me If You Can Musical “Catch Me If You Can” Musical Opening In 2011

Unless this production finds a way to incorporate Leo DiCaprio dancing in spandex, we’re not sure we’re interested!

What will they think of next? How about Catch Me If You Can: The Musical?

From the producers behind the Broadway hit Hairspray comes a singing-dancing stage adaption of Steven Spielberg’s 2002 true crime film, which featured baby-faced actor Leonardo DiCaprio as a teen conman and Tom Cruise as the FBI gumshoe hot on his trail. Before his 19th birthday, Frank Abagnale Jr. — a smart kid from a broken home — successfully conned millions of dollars by posing as a Pan American World Airways pilot, a Georgia doctor, and Louisiana attorney, and parish prosecutor. He became one of the most notorious crime figures of the 1960s. However, Frank’s primary crime was check fraud. The teen became so skillful at that art that the Feds turned to him for help catching other check forgers. Today, Frank — now a married father of three — earns millions creating unforgeable checks and has helped bring down some of the world’s most elusive con artists.

Catch Me If You Can “captures the astonishing true story of Frank Abagnale, Jr., a world-class con artist who passed himself off as a doctor, a lawyer, and a jet pilot—all before the age of 21. With straight-arrow FBI agent Carl Hanratty on Frank’s trail, we’re off on a jet-setting, cat-and-mouse chase, as a jazzy, swinging-sixties score keeps this adventure in constant motion. In the end, Agent Hanratty learns he and Frank aren’t so very different after all, and Frank finds out what happens when love catches up to a man on the run,” producers told Playbill.com on Monday.

On Monday, the show was picked up for previews on New York City’s famed Theater District that will kick off on March 7, 2011 at the Nederlander Theatre.

Catch Me If You Can will feature a pair of acting vets in the lead role. Wicked alum Norbert Leo Butz joins the cast as FBI Fraud Agent Carl Hanratty and Aaron Tveit — whose credits include work on The CW’s Gossip Girl – will tackle the role of Abagnale Jr.
