The remake of the 1984 film — which starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita — rose above lukewarm reviews to finish first at the US weekend box office, trounching the debut of The A-Team.

The Karate Kid, which stars Jackie Chan and Will and Jada’s baby boy Jaden Smith, took in $56 million at the North American box office, according to early estimates from Hollywood.com. The A-Team, a big-screen adaptation of the action series that ran on TV from 1983-1987, finished No. 2, earning just $26 million. After three weekends at No. 1, Shrek Forever After, slipped to No. 3 with $15.8 million.
Final tickets figures are due out on Monday.
