After six seasons and almost 100 episodes, The Closer is closing.

TNT announced today that Kyra Sedgwick’s popular crime drama will end its run at the conclusion of Season 7 in 2011.

The decision was made by Sedgwick, who has won a host of Emmys for her role as the Southern-accented Brenda Leigh Johnson, head of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit.

“I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we’ve created on The Closer,” the Bride of Kevin Bacon remarked in a press release Friday. “I will always be grateful to (series creator) James Duff for his love and friendship, as well as creating such a rich and complex character who I have loved living with year after year.”

Turner Entertainment Networks President Steve Koonin said: “The Closer was a pivotal series in setting a new course for TNT’s original programming, while also serving as a prime example of the storytelling strength possible on cable television.”

The Closer, which premiered in 2005, has been averaging more than 8 million viewers in its sixth season.

The show will return for a seventh season of 15 episodes — including the show’s 100th — sometime in 2011.
