‘Agents of SHIELD’: The Framework turned Ward into a decent human being — go figure

It figures that a digital paradise would turn out to be hell on earth. Maybe that’s why it makes so much sense that Ward (Brett Dalton) was actually a decent person, when everything and everyone else in The Framework was twisted in the worst way possible.

Daisy (Chloe Bennet) and Simmons’ (Elizabeth Henstridge) trip into their teammates’ virtual prison felt like waking up to a world playing Opposite Day, and not in the good way. Coulson (Clark Gregg) was an anti-Inhuman school teacher, May (Ming Na Wen) was head of Hydra, and Fitz (Ian De Caestecker) was a literal evil scientist. Simmons really put it best: “This isn’t The Framework, this is hell!”

Not too much has changed, considering Ward is still a mole, but at least this time he’s a double agent for the right side?

It will be interesting to see how Simmons and Daisy (and now possibly Coulson too) react to this different version of Ward. For most of “Agents of SHIELD’s” run, he was either a sadistic psychopath or possessed by a murderous monster, so seeing a version of Ward that protects the innocent and revolts against the evils Hydra commits will be a definite change of pace.

Now that Daisy has broken Coulson out of his Hydra-themed fever dream, we at least know how to save the others. An emotional appeal, like Daisy calling Coulson her family, is what’s needed to shake someone back into their old life, so everyone currently trapped in The Framework could theoretically break out. Coulson can be May’s emotional trigger, Simmons’ can be Fitz’s, and Fitz can hopefully be Mack’s (Henry Simmons).

Here’s hoping they manage to fry Aida’s (Mallory Jensen) evil code irreparably, riding them of all this LMD madness.

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
