Animation Buzz: First Look at Pixar's 'Lou,' Illumination Announces Four More Mo…

Call the kids, because we have some updates and goodies to share from upcoming animated films, including a new short from Pixar, the latest Lego movie and the slate of Illumination Entertainment through 2023.

Illumination Adds Four More

First, Illumination Entertainment and their distributor, Universal Pictures, announced four additional features in the works to be released in the next seven years. Variety reports these release dates picked out for the unknown titles: July 2, 2021; July 1, 2022; December 21, 2022; and June 30, 2023. Hopefully at least a couple are original efforts, especially since they did so well with the non-sequels The Secret Life of Pets and Sing last year. But chances are there could be Despicable MeMinionsSing and Secret Life of Pets installments in the mix.

Here’s the studio’s full slate, which has also moved some known titles around, through 2023:

June 30, 2017: Despicable Me 3
November 9, 2018: Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas
July 3, 2019: The Secret Life of Pets 2
July 3, 2020: Minions 2
December 25, 2020: Sing 2
July 2, 2021: TBD
July 1, 2022: TBD
December 21, 2022: TBD (possibly Sing 3 given the release date)
June 30, 2023: TBD

Pixar’s Lou

We’ve previously seen a teaser video announcing the Pixar short Lou, which is the directorial debut of animator Dave Mullins. Now USA Today has shared the above look at the actual film. The title character appears to be a monster who lives inside a lost and found box and is made up of items from the bin, including a red hoodie (or is he wrapped in the sweatshirt?) and baseballs for eyes. His name also clearly originates from letters from the words “lost and found.” The plot of the short sees Lou as watcher and protector of the kids on a playground, but he decides to act when one of the kids becomes a terror and a thief.

Check out the original video teaser again below and see Lou in its full six minutes screening ahead of Cars 3 when it opens June 16.

The Lego Batman Movie “Gotham Cribs” Promo

As if we weren’t excited enough for The Lego Batman Movie, a spinoff of the 2014 hit The Lego Movie, the Warner Bros. marketing team keeps releasing fun promos that are almost like supplemental shorts starring the title superhero minifig. The latest offers a tour of Wayne Manor and the Batcave for an episode of a fake Gotham Cribs show. We can’t get enough of the character, who is voiced by Will Arnett, especially when he’s showing off and also when he’s being confusing about his secret identity. Watch below and see the actual animated feature when it hits theaters next Friday, February 10.
