Cammie King Conlon, the child actress who portrayed the doomed daughter of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara in 1939’s cinema classic Gone With the Wind, died this week.
She was 76.
Family friend, Bruce Lewis, tells CNN that Conlon lost a battle against lung cancer at her home on California’s North Coast on Wednesday morning.
Conlon was just four-years-old when she was handpicked by MGM executives to play the small, but pivotal role of Bonnie Blue Butler in the blockbuster film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s famed novel, set in post-Civil War Atlanta. Her character’s death in a horseback riding accident irrevocably damaged parents Rhett and Scarlett’s already tumultuous marriage. The role was the beginning of a brief stint as a Hollywood child star for Conlon, who also voiced young doe Faline in Walt Disney’s Bambi three years later. It would be her final film role.
In her later years, Cammie spent her time working and raising a family in the California community of Fort Bragg. But no matter how old she got, the former actress never got tired of reprising her Bonnie Blue days for Gone With the Wind enthusiasts.
Cammie King Conlon is survived by one son, Matthew Ned Conlon, who was by her side when she expired.
