The unofficial fate of the cable program was sealed during a question-and-answer session at the 2013 dbAccess Media, Internet & Telecom conference, the moderator asked Moonves to describe what programming was coming on CBS. Moonves’ responded: “We have ‘Ray Donovan’ coming on, with Liev Schreiber, which comes on with ‘Dexter’s last season starting in June…”
Broadcast & Cable was the first to report the comments.
While this is more of an offhand remark than a definitive word, Showtime is a subsidiary of CBS Corp., so Moonves is one of the most likely to know the cable network’s upcoming schedules.
Until recently, it was simply expected that “Dexter” would soon be coming to an end. In Season 7, however, the darkly comedic series experienced record ratings for an energizing and popular storyline. It was exactly the kind of reaction that often keeps a show on the air longer than expected.
The comments from Moonves indicate otherwise. This is probably a good thing. After all, even though Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) found out Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) big secret — and then killed LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) to cover her brother’s crimes — there is only so much story to come after this.
