Chaz Bono’s documentary — Becoming Chaz — will premiere on The Oprah Winfrey Network.
The Queen of Talk’s recently-launched cable network has purchased the rights to the documentary that is based upon the transformation of Sonny and Cher Bono’s daughter, Chastity into their son, Chaz. Becoming Chaz invites the viewers to go through the remarkable journey of Chaz’s transformation. From change of hormones, to undergoing of surgeries, this man’s face lights up as he speaks of the sense of liberation he has experienced.
“We are proud to present this heartfelt and honest portrayal of Chaz’s personal transformation to our viewers,” Lisa Erspamer Chief Creative Officer, OWN, said in a statement released on Friday. “These courageous documentaries engage conversation and we are pleased to have them join OWN.”
Chaz began the process of becoming a transgender individual in June 2009 and became a legal man last year.
“Chaz is someone who has risked everything to become himself. But whatever he might have lost, he has gained far more,” Randy Barbato, Becoming Chaz director/producer, chimed in. “It takes great courage and strength to go against other people’s expectations of us in order to be true to ourselves.”
The documentary will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 23. A OWN premiere date has not yet been set.
