Choose Life, Choose Facebook, Choose the First 'Trainspotting 2' Trailer

They really did it. After years and years of talk and little expectation that it’d ever come together, they finally got the gang all back together and made a sequel to Trainspotting. By “they,” we mean original director Danny Boyle, original screenwriter John Hodge (adapting the sequel novel by author Irvine Welsh) and original producer Andrew Macdonald. And by “gang all,” we mean Renton (Ewan McGregor), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Spud (Ewen Bremmer) and Begbie (Robert Carlyle), plus Mickey Forrester (Welsh), Diane (Kelly Macdonald) and Gail (Shirley Henderson). The title: T2: Trainspotting.

And as proof it’s really happening, the first (NSFW) UK trailer is here, and it’s like a little reunion on your screen. McGregor as Renton is back with his “Choose Life” narration, though this time he speaks of all the social media and reality television and more that’s become the norm in our world since 1996. Even the drugs are different, more mysterious and “made in someone’s kitchen.” And is everyone addicted to something anyway, a lot of them to Facebook and Twitter? This could be a very interesting update on the lives of not just these characters but us all. Or it could just be a trip down memory lane.

There is some hint that T2: Trainspotting will depend too much on nostalgia and fan service revisits of people and places. When we see Diane, we hear Renton say he’s looking up old flames and thinking of how things might have gone differently. Right after he says, “Choose watching history repeat itself,” which implies we might see a few familiar scenes replayed and maybe only slightly done differently just because everyone is so much older if not also wiser. Still, Oscar winner Boyle wouldn’t waste his time with a remakequel, so we can expect something more substantial and a lot of new stuff in that original Trainspotting style.

For now, we can at least tell it looks both recognizably and freshly wonderful. And we’re excited for its release, which is really actually happening, on February 10.
