In Up All Night, Christina Applegate stars opposite Will Arnett as a newbie parent who has more than a difficult time adjusting to sharing their lives with a tiny human. And for Applegate, who gave birth to her daughter Sadie in February, it’s a subject that hits close to home.

“It’s a funny take [on raising a child] but it starts in a real place. All good comedy starts in a real place,” she told EW Monday night during the Television Critics Association press tour. “Obviously, raising a child is ridiculous and funny and things happen.”

Applegate and Co. recently made some major changes to the pilot, so she’s not sure how those changes will play out with the characters in the next episodes. “We just started on this journey,” she says. “I’m learning as we go along. I’ve seen that we’re just going to start learning about who they were and them versus the old them.”
