Did You Catch Stephen Colbert’s Cameo in ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’?

Not long ago comedian and apparent J. R. R. Tolkien enthusiast Stephen Colbert revealed to fellow late night host David Letterman that he actually had a cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. As you can see in the clip below, Letterman didn’t seem to believe Colbert when he insisted that his entire family flew to New Zealand to visit Peter Jackson’s set and ended up in the movie.

Well now that Desolation of Smaug has been in theaters for a while, people have started to spot his cameo and spread the word. And the funny thing is that it’s really not a very hidden cameo. Remember when the Bard (Luke Evans) is sneaking around Laketown and the camera passes a spy watching him, who then drops down an eye patch as a disguise? That’s Stephen Colbert. He’s not hidden at all, but he also so naturally fits into that world that he’s not distracting at all (though maybe he will be, now that everyone knows it’s him), and that’s the perfect kind of cameo if you ask us.

He’s not the only Colbert in the film, though. Fans have spotted his family members as well. How they know what his family members look like, we’re not sure we even want to know, but this is the Internet, where some random person can spot Stephen Colbert’s wife and kids as extras in a movie with literally hundreds of other extras in it (thousands, if you count all the digital actors).
