Electric ghost rhinos, crazy glam rockers & Detective ‘Dirk Gently’… Oh my!

Suddenly, and almost without warning, “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” went from being a puzzling show to putting its heroes directly into a puzzle.

Saturday’s episode, “Watkin,” puts Todd (Elijah Wood) and Dirk (Samuel Barnett) directly into a “Goonies”-style maze. Buried beneath the ground, right under Springsboro, the two began unraveling the massive mystery behind Edgar Spring’s device that powered the town, the death of his son Patrick and the continued riddle of Lydia’s dog-like state.

It’s a lot to take in, but now that we’re four episodes into the series, it feels completely on-par with how previous episodes have gone. And while Todd and Dirk fight their way through shrinking corridors and electronic ghost rhinos named Pepe, Amanda (Hannah Marks) and Farah (Jade Eshete) find themselves in an odd predicament all their own. Faced with the creepiest of FBI agents, Farah keeps an eye on Todd’s sister while doing her best to maintain confidence in her own investigative skills.

Of all the craziness in the BBC America series, one notion remains true: Everything is connected. While the two women watch as the Agent Weedle (David Lewis) finally drives away, they find smoke coming up from the sewer vent outside of the building. Lo and behold, the underground maze Todd and Dirk have found themselves trapped in leads back to Todd’s humble abode.

With a newly discovered map that they hope will lead to more answers, we get the biggest reveal thus far. Gordon Rimmer (Aaron Douglas) is really the missing glam rocker Lux DuJour. Not only has he been using an odd other-worldly device to swap in and out of other people’s bodies, his gang has been murdering people left and right. And if swapping the soul from the Weedle into that mouse tells us anything, it’s that the corgi everyone is looking for is the one witness with all the answers.

“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on BBC America.
