The Palins and The Johnstons weren’t the only people dropping their jaws in horror after Bristol Palin and baby daddy Levi Johnston announced their reconciliation — and engagement — on the cover of this week’s edition of Us Weekly.
Bristol’s ex, Ben Barber, 20, says he was blindsided by the young mother’s reunion with Levi. Barber and 19-year-old Bristol — the daughter of former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin — broke up just two months ago, he told news and opinion website The Daily Beast on Thursday.
“We got engaged two weeks ago,” Bristol beamed in an interview with the couple by the weekly magazine. “It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents.”
A native of Wasilla, Barber remains good friends with Bristol’s big brother Track, and was in his hometown for summer vacation from college when the Palin family first found out Bristol and Johnston had reunited with on-again, off-again flame after spending more time together for the sake of their 18-month-old son, Tripp
“[Bristol] never had a good relationship with her mom and dad, so not telling them [about the engagement] doesn’t surprise me, but I know the whole family isn’t happy about it. I was in town for a night and stopped by to see [Bristol's father] Todd and Track. They were furious,” Barber blabs.
Ben, who is spending his summer working as an electrician in nearby Delta Junction, argues that he was more of a dad to young Tripp than Levi and he can’t understand Bristol’s sudden change of heart. He also believes that all the attention being bestowed upon The Palins by an adoring right-wing.
“This is really surprising, you go from hating Levi to marrying Levi in two to three months,” Barber said. “I helped her out with Tripp more than Levi ever did. What does Levi have going for him? Nothing. He’s probably the worst person to give fame to anyways.”
He adds: “She totally swapped personalities. She used to be super passionate and a really nice person. Two or three years ago she was super cool. And around Christmas time she was the same Bristol. But now a lot of this has gone to her head. Her mom’s too.”
