'Fifty Shades Darker' Trivia: Why Christian Grey Has a 'Chronicles of Riddick&#0…

When you watch a movie like Fifty Shades Darker — the much-hyped sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey, and the second installment in a trilogy to conclude with Fifty Shades Freed next year — you expect a lot of the conversation to revolve around the hotter moments between Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Ana Steele (Dakota Johnson), or the delicious romantic intrigue that permeates every corner of the film. Curious fans, however, are very interested in a much smaller part of the film — a throwaway moment in Christian’s childhood bedroom where we see a Chronicles of Riddick poster hanging on the wall.

The Chronicles of Riddick, like Fifty Shades Darker, is the second film in a three-part series, and it stars Vin Diesel as a highly skilled predator and member of a warrior race who is stealth-like, can see in the dark and wipe out enemies with ease. Why the Riddick poster is of importance to people is partly because it’s a pretty random movie to have a poster of in your childhood bedroom, but also because Christian is such a mysterious character that literally any kind of personal information about him is a huge discovery.

So why The Chronicles of Riddick and what, exactly, does that say about Christian?

When Jamie Dornan was asked by Fox reporter Kevin McCarthy about the poster, he laughed it off as something the art department thought was fun. The fact that it’s also a Universal movie and timed out right (in terms of how old the movie is and how old Christian is) played into the decision.

Christian also has a UFC poster hanging in his old bedroom, and like Riddick, it gives off this tough-guy vibe, which we feel more of in the sequel. Here’s what Dornan said about that.

“[James] Foley wanted Christian to come across as a bit tougher and more imposing, and to show that he could handle himself and be a bit rough. So the idea that maybe he was into ultimate fighting made sense to him.”

Meanwhile, at the end of the interview, Fifty Shades author E.L. James remarks that she would’ve rathered a Trainspotting poster considering she’s a huge Danny Boyle fan.

While it may have made more sense from a corporate-synergy perspective to have, say, a 2 Fast 2 Furious poster hanging in Christian’s old room (Fate of the Furious hits theaters in two months), the Riddick poster does work better when it comes to the character. Riddick is a loner like Christian who plays by his own rules, whereas the Fast & Furious movies are more about teamwork and family, and very much opposite of everything Christian stands for.

Nevertheless, it just goes to show how much Vin Diesel permeates popular culture even when it’s a film that has nothing to do with him. We love ya Vin!
