First Full 'Moana' Trailer Brings Magic and a 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Tribute

We’ve seen a few teasers so far, but today brings the first full trailer for Disney’s next animated feature, Moana. This is an exciting movie for a number of reasons, including it being the return of Little Mermaid and Aladdin directors Ron Clements and John Musker (with help from Big Hero 6‘s Chris Williams and Don Hall), its inspiration coming from South Pacific mythology and of course its involvement of Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda as co-songwriter.

This trailer gives us more reason to anticipate the release of Moana, such as the displays of magical powers held by its two main characters. The eponymous Moana (voiced by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) has some control over water — or maybe it’s more like a friendly partnership. And the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) accompanying her on a heroic mission has shapeshifting abilities. They are also joined by a rooster, Heihei (Alan Tudyk), whose power, if any, would seem to be bad luck.

Another big attraction in the trailer is the bad guys. There’s a giant fire creature and, more noteworthy, the Kakamora people. They’ve appeared in a Moana promo before, but this is the first real look at the diminutive mythological cannibalistic tribe seen wearing full-body coconut armor in the context of the movie. Do they remind you of any particular action movie? No, not Waterworld! These “kinda cute” killer pirates and their big action sequence are reportedly inspired by Mad Max: Fury Road. But for the kids!

Moana arrives in theaters just in time for the holidays on November 23.
