Hot off the monster box office opening of Godzilla, director Gareth Edwards has landed a highly coveted gig. He will direct the first Star Wars stand-alone film, based on a screenplay by Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli), due in theaters on December 26, 2016.
Edwards made his directorial debut with the atmospheric and dreamy Monsters, which imagined a near future in which an alien invasion has changed the landscape of civilization. He put his creative stamp on the new version of Godzilla, rebooting the the creature to such great effect that two sequels have already received the green light. Edwards is attached to direct those as well, but production is still in the planning stages, and it sounds like the Star Wars project is ready to go
Now the speculation turns to which characters will be involved in the first stand-alone film. The official statement refers simply to “new stories beyond the core Saga,” which keeps things nicely vague. Everyone from Boba Fett to Han Solo to Yoda has been rumored. Who do you want to see?
