So far Guillermo del Toro has been pretty lucky when it comes to getting to make sequels to movies that, financially, aren’t the safest bets in the industry. He got to make Hellboy 2 even though the first film failed to crack $ 100 million at the global box office. And he’s already hard at work prepping Pacific Rim 2, even though that movie’s $ 411 million global haul wasn’t enough to set Warner Bros. accountants on fire.*
But, do not expect this sequel lucky to strike Hellboy a second time. In a recent Reddit AMA session [via Slashfilm], the director admitted that the movie was highly unlikely to ever get made. So he did the next best thing: explain what the movie would have been about:
“Well, you know, we don’t have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.”
So, sorry Hellboy fans, you’re just going to have to keep dreaming about another big-screen adventure. But at least now you have a few ideas to fill those dreams with.
As for del Toro’s other AMA answers, here’s what he thinks are the funniest episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philladelphia, his thoughts on Game of Thrones, and what his first meeting with Ron Perlman was like.
*Yes, the sad reality is a movie can gross $ 411 million at theaters and still not be wildly profitable (if at all) thanks to the ballooning costs of making and marketing big-budget movies.”
