'Hacksaw Ridge' Trailer Showcases Another True War Story From Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace are back with another war movie based on a true story. The duo initially collaborated on the Gibson-helmed Braveheart and later reunited for the Vietnam drama We Were Soldiers, Wallace’s directorial debut. This fall, Gibson is back in the director’s chair with Hacksaw Ridge, a World War II film co-written by Wallace and starring Andrew Garfield.

Who was Desmond T. Doss? 

In the movie, Andrew Garfield plays Desmond T. Doss, a conscientious objector who was drafted ino the U.S. Army during World War II and refused to take arms or fight, for religious reasons, even as he was sent into combat. He found other ways to be a hero, managed to save more than 50 men and wound up receiving the Medal of Honor from President Truman.

Where might we have seen his story before? 

Doss is already the subject of an award-winning 2004 documentary titled The Conscientious Objector, the trailer for which you can see below. He also stars in a special issue of the Dark Horse comic book series Medal of Honor published in 1994. And you can also read his story without illustration in Booton Herndon’s 1967 book The Unlikeliest Hero.

Do any of the other actors play real figures?  

In addition to Hugo Weaving and Rachel Griffiths playing Doss’s parents, there’s also Teresa Palmer as his first wife, Dorothy, Vince Vaughn as his good friend Sergeant Howell, a medic, and Sam Worthington as Captain Jack Glover, who harshly disapproved of Doss’s stance on violence only to be gratefully saved by him while fighting in Okinawa. Glover is also interviewed in the doc. 

When can we see it? 

Hacksaw Ridge opens in theaters on November 4.
