The Marvel Comics superhero took in $52.4 million domestically on its opening day Friday. That’s nearly a 50 percent increase over the $35.2 million first day of the original Iron Man back in 2008. The figure also puts the Paramount release — which stars comeback Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, and Mickey Rourke — on track for a debut weekend of $125 million to $135 million.
Iron Man earned $98 million when it hit theaters two years ago.
