This December marks the return of Star Wars to the big screen with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It is Disney’s intention to then start releasing one live-action Star Wars movie per year, with standalone Anthology films arriving in the years between chapters in a new trilogy that picks up 30 years after Return of the Jedi.
But with one successful Star Wars TV show (Star Wars Rebels) already up and running, what are the chances characters from that show will eventually show up in one of these movies? Well, we may have our answer.
The first standalone movie is Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, and what we know so far is that it will take place right before the first Star Wars, telling the story of how the rebels got their hands on the Death Star plans. Those plans, of course, revealed a weak spot that Luke Skywalker took advantage of at the end of A New Hope.
“Use the Force, Luke.” And he did!
We also know that Felicity Jones is leading Rogue One, along with Sam Claflin, Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker and Riz Ahmed — and new rumors are suggesting that the identity of Jones’ character may have a little something to do with one giant Star Wars fan-favorite: Boba Fett.
According to Heroic Hollywood’s El Mayimbe, he’s hearing Jones’ character might be Fett’s daughter, most likely making her a Mandalorian (unless there’s some whole beautiful adoption subplot we don’t know about yet).
Now here’s where it gets interesting. One of those Star Wars Rebels characters also happens to be a Mandalorian and a girl — and we don’t know much about her except that she trained to become a stormtrooper before ditching the Empire to fight alongside the Rebels.
Is Felicity Jones playing Sabine Wren?
The timing works out, as Rebels takes place not long before those Death Star plans are stolen, just as rebel forces are beginning to form and unite — and we expect to see a lot more of that in season two this fall. Is it possible they’re working towards a major reveal regarding her character? Could she be Boba Fett’s daughter? They may be a little too close in age — perhaps she’s his sister? If so, will she become the first Rebels character to cross over into live-action form?
And furthermore, will we see Boba Fett make an appearance on Rebels to help tie it all together?
That depends on how Disney wants to utlize the animated show in the big-screen world. It wouldn’t make sense for the characters of Star Wars Rebels to not play a huge role in the stealing of those Death Star plans, at least in terms of what the show seems to be building towards. Plus, if Disney plans to cinematic-universe the hell out of the Star Wars franchise, here’s the best place to start.
The crew onboard the Ghost (Kanan, Chopper, Ezra, Zeb, Hera, Sabine) are all very much a part of the surging rebel alliance, and may indeed be played in live-action form by some of those actors listed above. As a fan of Rebels, I want to see those characters involved in Rogue One. Plus, including them already gives fans of Rebels an entry point to the film since it’ll involve characters they’re already invested in.
So if that’s the case, then it’s just a matter of which Rebels characters they decide to bring over to the movies. Here’s an intro video on Sabine Wren. Do you think this is who Felicity Jones in playing? And what other Rebels characters would you want to see in live-action form?
