A plate of half eaten frog legs, alligator hunting, and fireworks helped close the curtain on the second season of MTV’s hit series Jersey Shore — and solidified the Jack & Coke-soaked soap’s place in TV trivia history as the highest-rated show in MTV’s 27-year run.

Scary thought. *Shudder…*

How’s this for an even scarier thought: Jersey Shore-themed Halloween costumes are topping many retailers’ lists as the most popular of the season, The Wall Street Journal said this week.

Costumes inspired by Snooki’s bootlegged beehive, The Situation’s well-defined abs, and Pauly D’s gelled-up coif have been flying off store shelves this Halloween season, the first All Hallow’s Eve since TV fans became entranced with a group of self-professed guidos and guidettes and their alcohol-fuelled romps around the sleepy Jersey Shore community of Seaside Heights. In fact, the cast of Jersey Shore have surpassed President Barack Obama, the blue creatures from Avatar, and even outre pop princess Lady Gaga to become the No. 1 Halloween costume chosen by young adults aged 18-to-24, according to a poll of 6,000 people issued this week.

The ghouls of The Shore are making their spooky debut in the middle of a big year for the adult costume industry. According to the National Retail Federation, costume retailers will take in approximately $1 billion peddling ghoulish attire to folks over 18, surpassing expectations for the children’s market, which is expected to take in just over $800 million this Halloween.
