Actress Laura Linney will stand beneath the lights of Broadway tonight, for the first time since losing her beloved dad to advanced lung cancer over the weekend.

Playwright Romulus Linney — whose work included stories set in Appalachia and tales about the Nuremberg trials — passed away at his home in Germantown, New York on Saturday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 80.

The elder Linney’s death kept Laura from attending Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles, where she won the trophy fo Best Actress in a Television Comedy or Musical for her role in the Showtime series The Big C. Linney plays teacherCathy Jamison, whose life is turned upside down after she’s diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. She was chosen over previous winners Toni Collette (United States of Tara), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), and Tina Fey (30 Rock), as well as Glee newcomer Lea Michele.

Tonight, Laura returns for the final weeks of her war-themed Broadway play Time Stands Still, which closes Jan. 30 at the Court Theatre on 48th Street.

In addition to Laura, Romulus is survived by his wife, Laura Callanan, and another daughter, Susan.
