Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary Prakash Karat, Communist Party of India’s A.B. Bardhan and Forward Bloc leader Debabrata Biswas Thursday led a nationwide movement to court arrest against the government’s failure to check rising prices.
While the Left leaders gathered at the Parliament Street for the ‘jail bharo’ (fill prisons) movement, their colleagues began the agitation across the country.
The Left parties have planned the protest at various cities, towns and district headquarters as part of their nationwide plan.
Around 25 lakh people are participating in mass picketing and in courting arrest programmes across the country, according to Left party leaders.
The parties are also demanding strengthening of the public distribution system, implementation of land reform schemes and more employment opportunities.
