‘Legends of Tomorrow’ delivers long-awaited return in the weirdest way

While “Legends of Tomorrow” has spent a big chunk of Season 2 building the villainous Legion of Doom — thus far containing Reverse-Flash (Matt Letscher), Damien Darhk (Neal McDonaugh) and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) — fans have been awaiting the return of the mysteriously absent Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill). Luckily the midseason finale, “The Chicago Way,” has shed a bit of light on that particular mystery.

Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) has done a more than admirable job as the leader of the Legends, and captain of the Waverider, in his absence — but it’s been hard not to wonder whatever happened to him. Now he’s back, sort of.

The Legion of Doom has located a guy who looks a lot like Rip — but there’s a few things a bit off. For instance, this Rip is a movie director, with an American accent, in 1967-era Los Angeles, who happens to be directing a film about the many adventures of… Rip Hunter?

Evidently somewhere along the timeline Rip made movies and we’ve just never known about it, right? And now he’s been discovered, and will bring all of his movie director bravado to fighting supervillains.

That’s one possibility… But never forget this, is a multiverse. It’s entirely possible this could be another Rip, couldn’t it? Then again, perhaps this is the genuine Earth-1 Rip we’ve been missing. Whatever the case, the Legion obviously has a plan for him, and we can’t wait to find out what it is — even if we’re scared.

Regardless of what happens, whenever Rip is ready to rejoin the Legends full-time, hopefully he can come to grips with no longer leading the team. Nobody is going to be willing to give up on Captain Lance anytime soon.

“Legends of Tomorrow” returns Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
