‘Lucifer’ Season 2 premiere: Why is Amenadiel losing his powers?

“Lucifer” Season 2 has premiered with new characters, a show-stopping musical number and the mother from hell.

At this point, it’s safe to say the devil has got a packed schedule of solving crimes and sorting out family drama on top of the mystery of what has happened to his poor, old mom.

The mystery we’re most interested in, however, is what’s up with Amenadiel’s (D.B Woodside) failing powers.

Twice in the premiere, Amenadiel tried to stop time and found his powers to be on the fritz. What’s got his angel wings in a twist? We have a couple theories.

It could be that Amenadiel is suffering from the same affliction that Lucifer (Tom Ellis) experiences with Chloe (Lauren German). If Lucifer’s feelings for Chloe are what’s making him vulnerable and stripping him of his invincibility, then could it be possible that Amenadiel’s feelings for Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) are doing the same thing to him?

It’s a pretty cool premise if falling in love somehow makes an angel more human — and thus less powerful/immortal — but we’re not totally sold on the idea yet. For one, Maze has never been in immediate proximity when Amenadiel’s powers have cut out. Still, we’re not hedging our bets on this theory just yet.

If there’s another explanation behind Lucifer’s tendency to lose his super strength and healing in Chloe’s presence, then it will be back to the drawing board. But if not, then we’re willing to bet that Amenadiel won’t be too happy that falling in love with Maze has had so many consequences.

Another theory is that his mother’s presence in Los Angeles could be messing with Amenadiel’s mojo.

We don’t know what Charlotte’s (Tricia Helfer) powers are or even what she is at this point, so who’s to say that she’s not the one interfering with her son’s ability to stop time? We’re not entirely sure Lucifer was wrong about his mother’s nefarious intentions, and if she does mean her sons harm, her first move would be stripping them of their angelic powers.

Watch your back Amenadiel. You’ve either been bitten by the love bug, or mommy dearest is after you.

“Lucifer” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
