Mark Wahlberg is piling on the projects like there’s no tomorrow. In addition to the just-completed ‘Contraband’ and in-production films ‘Ted,’ ‘Good Time Gang’ and ‘Broken City,’ his name has been attached to ‘The Brazilian Job,’ ‘Sharkey’s machine,’ ‘Five Brothers,’ ‘Cocaine Cowboys’ and the ‘Entourage’ movie, and now comes word via Deadline that he’s in negotiations to star in ‘2 Guns’ for Universal Pictures.

The film is based on a graphic novel about a DEA agent and an undercover naval intelligence officer who unwittingly investigate each other, with mob money and the CIA involved. Kind of a permutation on ‘The Departed,’ which also starred Wahlberg.

David O Russell — who has worked so well with Wahlberg on ‘Three Kings,’ ‘I Heart Huckabees’ and ‘The Fighter’ — originally was scheduled to write a draft of the film and direct, with Vince Vaughn as one of he leads, but that fell through due to scheduling conflicts.

‘2 Guns,’ from comic writer Steven Grant, is billed as a light-hearted crime romp, which is perfect for Wahlberg, who excels as tough guys with a heart of gold (and a streak of comedy).

By the way , here’s the publisher’s description of the graphic novel:

A pulp story about cops and thieves and the men that are something in between. Trench has targeted a local bank to rob, and asked Steadman in on the job. Trench figures it’s a great way to score — considering it’s a cover for mob money. They’ll be thieves ripping off thieves. But what Steadman doesn’t know is that Trench is a DEA agent. And what Trench doesn’t know is that Steadman’s a Naval Intelligence officer. They’re both cops! And neither one knows that they’re not robbing the mob, they’ve been set up to steal $ 50 million from the CIA!
