Marsha Ambrosius, formerly one-half of the Grammy-nominated neo-soul duo Floetry, is taking a stand against gay-bashing and bullying as she continues to carve out her own solo success.

In the video for Marsha’s latest tune “Far Away” — produced by Just Blaze — a man is seen walking with Ambrosius. He appears to be her boyfriend. They walk in a park, say hello to a group of men and to a woman and her children by the river. As the video proceeds, the same man is seen kissing another man. When the men return to the same park, now holding hands, the mother pulls her kids away and the lovers are shunned. Marsha’s friend is later assaulted while the American flag stands tall in the background. The clip concludes with the same man lying on his couch — a suicide letter and dozens of pills sit nearby.

Ambrosius, 33, says she wrote the song after a close friend attempted suicide and hopes the video will speak for those who have lost their voice due to bashing, homophobia, and bullying.

“I lost a friend and I’ve had friends that have attempted suicide. There are people that don’t have a voice to speak out and show what is happening and what can happen, so I just wanted people to see the honesty in it and be aware,” says Marsha, who boasts a strong gay following.

“I go to my shows and my audience is predominantly gay… I’ve been approached by many who’ve said my music has influenced them and we’ll speak about experiences that they’ve had. It’s just only right that I give that voice back.”

This message appears at the end of the video: “Dear friends, every year over 1 million people commit SUICIDE. Some were BULLIED because of their SEXUALITY. I lost a friend to SUICIDE, and I’m asking all of you to support alternative lifestyles. Don’t put up with or join in with BULLYING. It’s time we become more aware in this WORLD. Take a responsibility to make a difference. So if my MUSIC can save one life, I’ve done my job…”

“Far Away” is the second single from Ambrosius’ forthcoming debut solo album — Late Nights, Early Mornings –which is slated for release on Feb. 22.
