In 2011, MTV will revive Michael J. Fox’s 1985 teen comedy Teen Wolf in the form of a small screen drama that can only be described as Twilight — sans the abs and R. Pattz.

Inspired by the bloodthirsty craze prompted by TV hits like The Vampire Diaries and True Blood, MTV has tapped Hollywood newcomers Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed, and Dylan O’Brien for Teen Wolf: The Series, which draws many elements from the horror genre and werewolf mythology. The original film — which prompted a 1987 sequel starring Jason Bateman and John Astin — featured social outcast Scott Howard, a high school senior who discovers he is a werewolf.

“It has a fresh take and is very different from the original,” Liz Gateley, Senior Vice-President of MTV series development, said last year. “It has more of an ‘American Werewolf in Paris’ feel to it. It’s a dramatic thriller with two best friends in the center who provide a great comedy element: They are two very relatable characters on the outer circles of popular cliques.”

This won’t be Teen Wolf’s first go-round on the small screen; the movie was briefly adapted into an animated series for CBS’ Saturday Morning Cartoon format in 1986.

Teen Wolf: The Series will debut on MTV early next year.
