On the heel of 14 record-breaking Emmy nominations, executives over at Netflix sat down to discuss their current business affairs in an über-hip Google Hangout interview that took place live on YouTube.

Executives touched mostly on economics and stock options, but also mentioned Netflix’s incredible success with original programming. The company now has a solid slate of original shows under its belt, including House of CardsArrested Development, and Orange Is the New Black. ”When we look at original content, whether it’s House of Cards or Arrested Development, we’re just in the very early innings of this. We’re figuring out how to promote them, and what the ongoing value is, what we see is if we do it right, then these will turn into some real franchises,” Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said.

House of Cards was recently nominated for nine Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, while Arrested Development had the pop-culture world buzzing for months. ”Without giving ratings numbers, I will tell you every one of these shows is drawing TV-sized audiences. You know that House of Cards is a hit because when you walk into Starbucks, people are talking about. So without the precision of a number, you know that these shows are hits,” Ted Sarandos, the chief content officer of Netflix said.

Netflix is getting ready to release its next original program, Mako Mermaids, which is a seemingly different turn from the usually heavy fare. Mako Mermaids, about a group of teenage mermaids/mermen who deal with living on land and in the sea, premieres July 26.
