New ‘AHS’ theory firmly connects Billie Dean Howard to ‘Roanoke’

Months ago, while we were all still smack dab in speculation city, we proposed that the new season of “American Horror Story” would mark the return of Sarah Paulson’s psychic character, Billie Dean Howard. Originally introduced in “Murder House” — where she referenced the Lost Colony of Roanoke very briefly — Howard most recently popped up in, and subsequently bolted from, “Hotel.”

There are two main elements to Howard’s character — talent and ego. Her talent, as we’ve already learned, is that she can communicate with the dead. Her ego? Well, that not only led her to become a pretty well known celebrity in the “AHS” universe, it also awarded the psychic with her own television series for Lifetime.

A recent Reddit theory has begun to gain a bit of ground, thanks to a user by the name of @mansonfamily, that poses the notion that “My Roanoke Nightmare” is really Billie Dean Howard’s Lifetime series come to fruition. Take a moment to really think about that concept …

Not only would that be one more connection from “Roanoke” to “Murder House” — and at this point, there are a few — it would add one more meta element to the new narrative Ryan Murphy and the gang have presented to us this time around. To add fuel to the fire, Murphy recently told EW that Episode 6 will have a “huge turn”in the story no one will be expecting.

“You’ll see starting in episode 6, the show has a huge turn and the thing that you think you’re watching is not what you’re watching,” co-creator Ryan Murphy reveals to EW.

To really toy with us, co-creator Brad Falchuck jumped on Murphy’s statement to EW, saying:

“Even though the subject matter has gotten out, it’s irrelevant because nobody gets what we’re doing,” says co-creator Brad Falchuk. “No matter what you think it is, it’s not that. Then, episode 6 comes and you’re like, ‘Wait! What happened?’”

Taking these breadcrumbs into consideration, it’s hard not to see some sort of believability behind the theory. Not to mention, Paulson’s Shelby looks a lot like Billie Dean Howard. Could the host of the series also be flexing her acting muscles? As we said earlier, she’s got quite the ego. And, hey, it’s her show!

We’re not saying this is the big twist awaiting us midseason. But … don’t be surprised if during an intense scene, you suddenly hear someone yell, “Cut!” If Paulson turns and gives the camera a wink, that’d just be icing on the proverbial cake.
