New ‘Doctor Strange’ trailer feels like Marvel by way of ‘Inception’

Highlight on New Movie Releases DVD

At Comic-Con in San Diego, there are all kinds of superheroes, sci-fi shows and cool cartoons vying for the attention of the costumed legions. One of the most anticipated projects, however, is something “Strange.”

On Saturday (July 23), Marvel unveiled a crowd-pleasing new trailer and poster for the Benedict Cumberbatch-starring “Doctor Strange,” expected to bridge a gap between Marvel’s terrestrial universe (Captain America, Iron Man) and its intergalactic one (“Guardians of the Galaxy”). Judging by the reveal, it seems like November can’t get here soon enough.

“You think you know how the world works?” Tilda Swinton’s sage-like character The Ancient One tells Dr. Stephen Strange at the beginning of the atmospheric clip. “What if I told you the reality you know is one of many?”

What follows feels like Marvel by way of “Inception,” with a healthy dose of “The Matrix” films thrown in for flavor. We see the car accident that changes Strange’s worldview, his training in the mystic arts and his otherworldly teleportation.

We also see the star-packed supporting cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams and Mads Mikkelson.

“This doesn’t make any sense,” Strange insists.

Replies The Ancient One: “Not everything does. Not everything has to.”
