Fargo is a perfect movie. Yes, what a controversial stance in the year 2014, but there it is. It’s an exquisitely written, perfectly plotted dark comedy about murder and congenial mayhem wrapped in a slice of Middle America most people never pay much mind to. There’s not a note in this movie that’s out of key.

This is a remastered Blu-ray, so it should be a slight visual bump over the last release (which I don’t have to compare it to, unfortunately), but other than that there’s nothing new to this release. But we don’t really care, because Fargo is like Halloween or Evil Dead: a movie that should keep getting rereleased until it’s in every single person’s movie collection.

Special Features: A straight port of everything from the last Blu-ray release (which was itself from the DVD), but it’s still noteworthy for a commentary track by cinematographer Roger Deakins.

Other Notable New Releases

If Fargo is a perfect movie, 47 Ronin is a highly, highly imperfect movie. It’s not a complete trainwreck by any means, it’s just a strange calamity of imperfections that all collide to create a weirdly distant movie featuring Keanu Reeves as a samurai in a fantasy world who bands together to take out an evil oppressor. There are parts of it that are visually stunning, and then others that are shockingly flat. The cast is quite interesting, but they’re not given much to do. It’s a confused movie, but if you’re a hard-core fan of Reeves’ or you like stuff that’s trying to be live-action anime, you may dig it more than most.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is one of those movies that’s more likeable in theory than in practice. It represents a grand “What if…” that was fun to think about when it seemed like no one would ever actually make a sequel to Anchorman, but now that it’s here it’s just, well, kind of here. It’s not a grand, unfunny disaster, it’s just almost too literal as a sequel, too beholden to continuing jokes and threads and characters from the first film instead of striking out on its own. If you love, love, love the first, you’ll like the second, and who knows, maybe with enough time, it’ll appreciate in comedic value as much as the first Anchorman, which also benefited from quite nicely from constant repeats on cable.

Got kiddos in the house? Then you may want to pay attention to two of this week’s straight-to-video movies. The first is The Little Rascals Save the Day, which is an attempt to bring the classic gang of misfit kids to modern times for a new generation. It’s precisely the wholesome, very family-friendly film you’d expect. The same goes for Disney’s The Pirate Fairy. It may be going straight to video, but this one actually boasts the pretty impressive voice cast of Tom Hiddleston (see him sing here), Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, Lucy Liu and Megan Hilty.

Lastly, go vintage with King Kong vs. Godzilla (or King Kong Escapes), which will no doubt make the wait for this summer’s Godzilla even harder.
