Noah is a stunning piece of filmmaking. Of course, that’s to be expected when it comes to a movie about the construction of a giant ark intended to survive an apocalyptic flood, but Darren Aronofsky pushes his movie far beyond your standard biblical epic and turns it into a transcendent, engrossing spectacle. Seriously, there are just some downright gob-smacking visuals in this movie, with many of them coming before the big flood even happens.

But Noah is also a complex morality tale about the very nature of mankind and they way we often blind ourselves to the realities around us. I can see why that notion may offend some, who would prefer a more pop-culture, animals two-by-two version of this story, instead of Aronofsky and writer Ari Handel’s rather grim depiction of mankind’s last days.

Other Notable New Releases

There’s a curious quality to The Other Woman that’s much sweeter and more endearing than you’d expect from a movie about a woman (Cameron Diaz) who learns the man she’s been dating has a wife (Leslie Mann), and has also been cheating on both of them with a third woman (Kate Upton). It eventually becomes a rather goofy revenge comedy, especially when the man in question (Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) becomes a cartoon character, but there’s actually a respectable amount of heart regarding women and the way they allow themselves to be treated. In particular, Diaz and Mann both give some nice, vulnerable turns, and even Upton gets some smiles. It’s a nice change of pace for a rom-com to be about the relationship between friends instead of a couple.

Also out this week is the enjoyable but familiar rom-com Cuban Fury, starring the great Nick Frost as a man who tries to win over a new woman at work with his secret dancing skills. All of the rom-com beats in it are very typical, but a good supporting cast (Kayvan Novak is a real standout as the sassy fellow dancer, and Ian McShane is always fun to watch) kicks this up a notch.

But, if you don’t tolerate rom-coms and all you want from the world of cinema is to see some hard-core men beat up other dudes, then boy is this a good week for you. Not only is the Ong Bak Trilogy now available in one nice box set, but you can get an extra dose of the legendary Tony Jaa in The Protector 2. Not all of Jaa’s movies are as much a grand slam as the first Ong Bak, and they do get increasingly disappointing the more spiritual they get, but they’ve still got some stunning action choreography that will impress every single time.

And, lastly for the David Lynch fans of the world, Twin Peaks hits Blu-ray this week in a box set that includes 90 minutes of additional deleted scenes from the theatrical film Fire Walk with Me, which is available in this set along with both seasons of the show and the pilot in HD for the first time. If you’re a fan of the series, there’s no question this is the definitive set to own.
