The number of accidents in India is increasing day by day due to inappropriate maintenance of highways facing which the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) now plans to provide some facilities to road users so that they can inform the concerned authority about the condition of the roads.

NHAI authority mentioned that it will soon file a tender to set up the call centre. The highways minister Kamal Nath laid this proposal.

NHAI official said, “The universal number for the entire country can come handy in reducing deaths. People can call up the number as and when they see any accident on highways. The centre will pass the message to the nearest toll plaza. Ambulances can rush to the accident site.”

Moreover the immediate medical help can reduce the number of deaths for which the ministry is also planning to organize more trauma centers along the Indian highway stretches. An official said, “We can even let the call centre be run by an established BPO operator in the country.” He added, “People can lodge complaints on a whole range of issues including poor maintenance, snarls and any irregularity. The complaints will be passed on to the official concerned for compliance.”

An acquiescence status report would be prepared after every three months to ensure that the users’ complaints are being worked on. This report will also be uploaded on the NHAI website.
