One of ‘HTGAWM’s’ Keating 5 is safe… and pregnant?!

We’ve finally got confirmation that one of the Keating 5 is not under the sheet on “How to Get Away with Murder,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’ll stay that way.

As it turns out, Laurel (Karla Souza) is the second body found in Annalise’s (Viola Davis) house in the flash forward, and she’s barely hanging on to her life. As a team of doctors try to bring Laurel back from the brink of death, Meggy (Corbin Reid) announces to the room that she knows this survivor. And that’s not the only thing she announces — Laurel is also pregnant.

The big question we’ll have to ask over the course of the season is obviously who has fathered Laurel’s baby.

Given that four weeks earlier in real time, Laurel hasn’t been having sex with much of anyone — that we know about, at least — it’s obvious the conception hasn’t happened yet. So can we expect her to reconcile with Frank (Charlie Weber)? Or will she and Wes (Alfred Enoch) finally give in to their feelings for each other?

More importantly, could one of them be under the sheet?

We asked Matt McGorry about that shocker of an ending, and mostly, he seems a little bitter that Asher isn’t safe yet. “When I read it was like, ‘Well, it’s not Asher.’ Nice for Karla,” McGorry jokes. “It feels a little bit like I imagine being on ‘Survivor’ might feel.”

Hopefully we find out Asher’s fate soon, mostly because we’ve grown to love “doucheface” over the course of the past three years, especially considering how much he’s grown.

“We’ve seen Asher be so confident, and to see him be really very nervous and anxious is not something we might expect, but also makes a lot of sense to me too. A lot of times, I think the people who end up being the most brash and wily are often  the ones who are the most insecure in some ways. They often use that as a way to mask those insecurities.”

Despite Asher’s rocky start in court, he does end up coming through for his client, even if said client isn’t too happy about it.

Ultimately, the way Asher and Bonnie (Liza Weil) handled the statutory rape they discovered is a testament to how much each of these characters has grown. Asher, in particular, might still be a vulgar frat boy in some circumstances, but he’s quick to jump in on the hot teacher discussion with a much needed dose of reality that what happened was a crime, not a joke.

“He might be very much aware of how that’s wrong, but not understand how certain comments he makes are inappropriate and not helpful towards rape culture as a whole,” McGorry says, “But I was really pleased to see how he handled that, and I think what does make Asher a good person is his openness and willingness to learn and to understand that things are maybe different than he thought that they would be.”

As far as Asher’s relationship with Michaela goes, McGorry does think that the feelings on Asher’s side are genuine, even if Michaela’s maybe are not. “I believe that Asher really has some deep feelings for Michaela,” McGory says. “At this point she obviously thinks of him as a hook-up buddy, and I believe that he has a feeling — and perhaps it’s well founded — that she might actually have more feelings for him than she’s showing than she even realizes.”

His relationship with Michaela might be heating up, but we can’t forget about his old fling with Bonnie.

While they’re not exactly on good terms yet, sharing a case so sensitive to each of their respective backgrounds has no doubt bridged the gap between them, even if only a little.

Still, don’t expect Asher to be the shoulder Bonnie cries on in the wake of her father’s death.

“I think Bonnie’s a very private person, as much as she can be,” explains McGorry. “Especially now that they’re not in a relationship anymore, I don’t know that she’ll be going out of her way to reveal things to him that she wouldn’t otherwise have to.”
