‘Outsiders’ cast on the reality of Sally-Ann and Hasil’s situation

Highlight on New Movie Released DVD

After the first season of “Outsiders,” fans couldn’t get enough of the relationship between Hasil (Kyle Gallner) and Sally-Ann (Christina Jackson). These people from two wildly different worlds managed to find love together against all odds — it was very “Romeo & Juliet.”

Of course, “Romeo & Juliet” didn’t exactly have a happy ending — and with that in mind, “Outsiders” is letting the reality of Hasil and Sally-Ann’s relationship unfold. The Farrell family member decided to stay with his clan at the end of Season 1, and now Sally-Ann is alone and pregnant with his child.

“It’s honest. There’s nothing rosy or sweet or endearing about it. I think Sally-Ann ended up in this situation as a result of being very trusting, and loved, and everything happened very quickly. Now the honeymoon is over,” Jackson says. “There’s a responsibility to bringing accuracy to that story. To bring the ambivalence and maturity.”

As she comes to term with her pregnancy, it’s natural to wonder how she’ll handle it. After all, it’s not as if Sally-Ann comes from a well-off family in the first place. Meanwhile, she can’t exactly count on Hasil to provide monetary support.

“I remember in the original script there was a question of putting the father on child support as an option,” the actress remembers. “But Hasil doesn’t have a social security number, so it’s not.”

Meanwhile, Hasil has no idea the anguish the woman he loves is going through, as she tries to figure out what to make of her life. Instead, he’s knee-deep in family drama thanks to the reappearance of Big Foster (David Morse).

“Hasil was forced to make a choice, and he chose his family over Sally-Ann,” Gallner explains. “At the same time, he’s not ready to let her go. He’s being torn between these two worlds — his loyalty to his family, or the love of Sally-Ann.”

If and when he learns about his unborn child, it’s not going to make matters any easier for both. It’s clear that these two love each other and want to be together, but as Gallner says, “Even if they do decide to make it work, one of them has to make such a big sacrifice for the other.”

Jackson wonders, “Then you have to ask yourself, ‘Is it worth it? Whatever decision I make, is it worth it?'”

“Outsiders” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on WGN America.
