Remember: no matter where Peter Weller goes, there he is. Deadline has reported that the star of sci-fi classics like ‘The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension!’ and ‘Robocop’ has joined the cast of J.J. Abrams’ upcoming ‘Star Trek’ sequel in an unspecified role. Weller had a very busy 2010, guest-starring on ‘Dexter,’ ‘Psych’ and ‘Fringe,’ the Abrams-created sci-fi investigation show on Fox. And when he’s not busy acting (or serving the Prime Directive), he’s busy teaching at Syracuse University and earning a Ph. D in Italian Renaissance art history at UCLA.
Casting news for part two has been heating up in the past few days with the rumors that Alice Eve might have the female lead, and Benicio Del Toro might be the villain, but it definitely won’t be Khan. Trekkies will be quick to point out that Weller appeared on ‘Enterprise’ as Frederick Paxton, the commander of a moon-based colony, who led a campaign to kick all extraterrestrials off of Earth. Fans however, probably shouldn’t expect him to reprise the role, considering these new movies are focused on rebooting the vast ‘Star Trek’ mythology. So Spock can rest easy on that one.
The still-untitled ‘Star Trek’ sequel won’t arrive in theaters until May 27, 2013 — plenty of time to get really impatient.
