There has been a lot of early Oscar buzz for Woody Harrelson’s performance in the upcoming film ‘Rampart.’ Head to the movie’s trailer page on Apple and it’s peppered with quotes praising his role as Dave Brown, a corrupt LAPD officer — a role that fans of ‘The Shield,’ the critically acclaimed police drama on FX, will find quite familiar. The show, which ran from 2002-2008, followed Detective Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis), a vigilante cop in L.A. who ends up jeopardizing his career and family. Not only are the plot points between ‘The Shield’ and ‘Rampart’ similar, but the look, dialogue and overall tone are, too (just take a look at this Mackey photo and compare it with Harrelson’s in the poster to the right).
Whether ‘Rampart’ is a ‘Shield’ copy remains to be seen. Audiences in New York and Los Angeles will find out on Nov. 23. ‘Rampart,’ which also stars Ice Cube, Anne Heche and Sigourney Weaver, expands wider in 2012.
