DreamWorks Pictures’ Real Steel narrowly won first place at the weekend box office to top for a second straight weekend. The Hugh Jackman-starrer added an estimated $ 16.3 million to bring its two-week total to $ 51.7 million domestically. The Shawn Levy-directed action drama, distributed by Disney, finished first overseas as well with $ 24.2 million for a foreign total of $ 56.6 million and worldwide total of $ 108.3 million.

Paramount’s Footloose remake, directed by Craig Brewer and starring Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough, debuted in a close second in North America with $ 16.1 million from 3,549 theaters. The film was made for about $ 24 million.

Universal prequel The Thing opened in third place to $ 8.7 million from 2,996 theaters, which was below studio expectations.

In its second weekend, Columbia’s The Ides of March earned $ 7.5 million for a total of $ 22.2 million so far.

Warner Bros.’ Dolphin Tale rounded out the top five with $ 6.3 million and has collected $ 58.7 million after four weeks. The family film cost $ 37 million to produce.

Following in sixth, seventh and eighth, Moneyball earned $ 5.5 million for a total of $ 57.7 million after four weeks, 50/50 added $ 4.3 million for a total of $ 24.3 million after three weeks, and Courageous brought in $ 3.4 million for a three-week total of $ 21.4 million.

20th Century Fox comedy The Big Year, starring Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson, bombed badly with just $ 3.3 million from 2,150 theaters, an average of only $ 1,547 theaters per site.

Internationally, The Three Musketeers came in second behind Real Steel with $ 20.4 million and has earned $ 49 million overseas so far. The Paul W.S. Anderson action adventure opens in North America this Friday. Third place went to Johnny English Reborn, which added $ 17.3 million and is already up to $ 85.1 million internationally. The comedy doesn’t hit domestic theaters until October 28.

In limited domestic release, Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In opened in six theaters where it earned an impressive $ 231,000, an average of $ 38,500 theater. Moviegoers didn’t seek out Joel Schumacher’s Trespass, which took in just $ 18,200 in 10 theaters, and Texas Killing Fields earned only $ 9,600 from three theaters.
