Richard Madden puts ‘GoT’ Lord Stoneheart theory to bed

Highlight on New Movie Released DVD

While promoting his new show “Medici: Masters of Florence,” Richard Madden decided to dash any final hopes of a popular “Game of Thrones” theory.

Lady Stoneheart is a bit of a sore point among “Game of Thrones” fans, especially those faithful to the original source material. In the books, Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) is resurrected after the Red Wedding as Lady Stoneheart, who ends up seeking bloody vengeance on those who killed her and her family.

Every season, fans point out clues and foreshadowing that this year will be the year of Lady Stoneheart… and every year they’re wrong.

In Season 6, we all pretty much gave up hope on Catelyn’s return, but that hopelessness gave way to a new theory: Lord Stoneheart.

Catelyn wasn’t the only one killed at the Red Wedding, and wouldn’t it make for a perfect twist if Robb Stark (Richard Madden) turned out to be the one resurrected in the TV adaptation? Well, we can probably put that theory to bed now too.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Madden says he has yet to be contacted about any reappearance on the show, and even if he was, he might not do it. “I’ve not heard anything, of course. I suppose I wouldn’t have the phone call, because they’re very secretive about everything, unless you get some of the cast drunk and they’ll tell you what they are doing … I don’t know, I’d have to read … I stopped reading the books a couple years ago because the show kept changing and I’d much rather just watch it and see what came next.”

While you can never rule out the possibility that he’s lying in the name of one final twist — remember the way Kit Harington kept pretending Jon Snow was dead all year? — Madden sounds pretty sincere.

It’s obviously a disappointment that the show doesn’t plan to include one of the fans’ favorite plots from the book, but with only two short seasons left, they’ve got to focus on the cast and characters they’ve got left.

“Game of Thrones” is set to return in the summer of 2017.
