A month after a fragrance ad starring pop diva Beyonce was banned in the UK, British broadcasting watchdog group Ofcom has been inudated with complaints about racy performances by singing stars Christina Aguilera and Rihanna during Sunday’s X Factor finale, which was watched by almost 20 million people.
The show saw both entertainers perform a suggestive routine with scantily clad dancers. Rihanna even stripped off her gown to parade around the stage in a bikini in Saturday’s first part of the final.
Both ITV and Ofcom have each received no fewer than 1,000 complaints since the weekend broadcast. Micro-blogging hub Twitter has been flooded with wrathful comments by infuriated fans who are pouring out their angst at Rihanna’s “disgusting” choice of costume. Xtina’s plummeting little black dress is also getting flack from furious viewers, who watched with contempt as the newly-single mom cavorted amidst a bunch of semi-nude dancers dressed in just underwear and suspenders.
“We are assessing the complaints but are not currently investigating the show,” an Ofcom spokesperson remarked on Monday.
X Factor producers are standing behind their program.
“We are confident that the performances given by our guest artistes on Saturday were appropriate for the show,” says a show spokesperson.
