Some of you might be too young to remember the time Sean Young tried to prove she’d be the perfect catwoman in ‘Batman Returns’ by dressing up in a homemade costume and stalking Tim Burton. (Needless to say, she didn’t get the role.) But this week she donned the outfit again to prove she’s “ready to pay my dues,” as she’s having trouble getting work. See her cringe-worthy appearance on ‘The Late Show With David Letterman’ after the jump.
Young, who was a hot commodity in the ’80s thanks to roles in ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘No Way Out,’ quickly garnered a reputation for being a little cuckoo. She’d originally been cast in Burton’s ‘Batman’ as Vicki Vale, but was replaced by Kim Basinger after breaking her arm. Feeling Burton owed her, she then took matters into her own hands by wearing her own Catwoman costume onto the Warner Bros. lot and also appeared on the Joan Rivers show in costume to plead her case. The role went to Michelle Pfeiffer, while Young’s career went nowhere.
During her Oct. 4 appearance, Young admitted to Letterman that she’s had trouble finding jobs, explaining, “Well, it could’ve been the Catwoman thing.” And reportedly stalking James Woods probably didn’t help either.
Her last major role, by the way, was in 1994’s ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.’ Highlights since then include her diva-esque appearance on the ill-fated ‘Skating With the Stars’ and a stint on ‘Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew’ along with Amy Fisher and Michael Lohan. The actress checked herself into rehab in 2008 after being ejected from the DGA Awards after heckling ‘The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” director Julian Schnabel during his acceptance speech.
She contested the label that she’s “difficult,” saying “that’s not true” and that she’s actually “sweet and likable.”
“I need the folks to know I have a sense of humor and that I’m easygoing,” she said as part of her bid to get hired again. Her proof: a video that showed her at her new “part-time job,” as a sign holder wearing the Catwoman suit. Near the end of the video, Young shouts, “See I’m not crazy.”
So no, definitely not crazy.
