‘Sherlock’ Season 3: Watch the fake Moriarty scene … and the romantic real one

Steven Moffat knows how to throw off even the most zealous fans. That became clear once the “Sherlock” Season 3 premiere aired in the UK — without a Moriarty scene that one fan had recorded during filming of the episode.

Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen “The Empty Hearse” yet.

Sure, there is a Moriarty scene in the premiere episode, but it’s definitely not the scene captured by a fan in the spring of 2013. In fact, “The Empty Hearse” makes it clear that the clip — which shows Moriarty (Andrew Scott) and Mycroft (Mark Gatiss) leaving a building and shaking hands — could never have happened.

There is still a chance that this odd scene could appear in a later episode of “Sherlock” Season 3, but it doesn’t seem likely. It’s even less likely that any Moriarty scene could top the one that did appear in “The Empty Hearse.”

You know the one.

It’s nice to know that the creators of “Sherlock” have minds just as amusingly “romantic” as the show’s fans.

“Sherlock” will air its second episode, “The Sign of Three,” in the UK on Sunday (Jan. 5), while the US premiere of Season 3 comes on Sunday, Jan. 19.
