If you’re making a movie in Hollywood and Steve Carell isn’t attached in some way, you’re probably doing it wrong. The hilariously busy and beloved star will reportedly team with famed authors Dave Barry and Alan Zweibel for an adaptation of their forthcoming novel ‘Lunatics.’ Out in January, the book focuses on two warring suburban dads, whose conflicts escalate with world-changing results. Carell, who will produce, would play Phil, a pet-store owner and kids’s soccer ref, who gets into a major disagreement with another dad during one game. No word yet on the other dad, but since Universal is the studio behind this one, start guessing the studio’s usual comedy suspects: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell.
Since leaving ‘The Office,’ Carell has been acting like a man possessed. He’s set to star in ‘Burt Wonderstone’ with Jim Carrey, ‘Foxcatcher’ for director Bennett Miller, ‘Great Hope Springs’ with Meryl Streep, ‘Despicable Me 2’ and ‘Dogs of Babel,’ as well as the already filmed ‘Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.’ No moss on this rolling stone.
Barry is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, while Zweibel is one of the original writers of ‘Saturday Night Live’ and owner of many Emmys as well as a Thurber Award. ‘Lunatics’ arrives in print and online on Jan. 10, 2012.
