‘Suits’ spin-off: Why Jessica Pearson deserves her own show

Gina Torres as Jessica Pearson 'Suits'

As “Suits” moves through Season 6, it’s slowly becoming clear to audiences that the true stars of this series are not the men, but the ladies. While Harvey (Gabriel Macht), Mike (Patrick J. Adams) and Louis (Rick Hoffman) are still lovable complicated characters portrayed by talented actors, Rachel (Meghan Markle), Donna (Sarah Rafferty) and Jessica (Gina Torres) have been stealing every scene. It almost seems as if executive producer Aaron Korsh is readying audiences for a “Suits” spin-off featuring the ladies, which would be amazing news.

Because all the lead characters on this series are so layered and well-thought out, “Suits” could still stand on its own if Mike, Harvey and Louis remain on the original series. If a women-powered spin-off were to happen, it makes the most sense for it to center around Jessica Pearson.

Jessica Pearson

Jessica Pearson is a powerful enough character to anchor her own series. After helping clean up the disaster that Pearson Specter Litt is currently in, it would awesome to see her go off and star anew with her own firm. Donna, forever stuck in a rut as long as she’s tied to Harvey’s desk, would finally break free from her secretary role if she follows Jessica to the new offices. And if Rachel breaks things off with Mike, it would be natural for her to follow her mentor wherever she goes.

There would be male partners included in her new firm, of course. For Pearson is a fierce feminist. We’d also get to know more about Jessica’s background. Who’s her family? Where did she grow up? There’s still so much learn about one of the most kick-butt leading female characters on TV.

Even though we’re only three episodes into Season 6, “Suits” is already knocking its Bechdel test out of the park. All of these female heavy scenes include discussions about race, work, family – and these woman talk with such intelligence and wit – imagine an entire series like this? It would be wonderful. And the major bonus? All the opportunities for crossover episodes. There are so many way for which the original crew could reunite, whether it be work based or personal, so audiences won’t have to worry about never seeing all their favorite “Suits” characters together again.

“Suits” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on USA.
