‘Supergirl’ has done a stellar job filling the hole left by Cat Grant

On a scale of 1-10, we miss Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) on ‘Supergirl’ at about a 15. However, the CW’s newest addition to their superhero lineup has done a pretty excellent job of filling the hole she left in Season 2.

Besides Winn (Jeremy Jordan) officially working for the DEO and the addition of Chris Wood as Mon-El, the loss of Cat Grant was one of the many changes to “Supergirl” this year we were unsure would land well with the audience. The first two changes have gone over even better than expected, and we’re pleased to say that while Cat Grant is surely gone (and not returning in the near future as far as we can tell) she’s not forgotten.

Instead of name-dropping their missing character every single episode, “Supergirl” has opted to remember Cat Grant in a much more subtle and enjoyable way. We’ve maintained the familiar surroundings of CatCo, both via James (Mehcad Brooks) and Mon-El’s brief stint as an intern, and Snapper Carr (Ian Gomez) is always a welcome — if slightly gruff — reminder that Cat’s always only ever a phone call away.

Even better, Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) new mentor, if you can really call Snapper that, has a definite air of superiority and media know-how that has filled the void left by Cat’s scathing one-liners and power suits. They have a different humor and personality, but their characters achieve the same goal within the narrative for the most part: To be Kara’s no-nonsense, quasi-cruel cheerleader.

More than anything though, we can see Cat’s guidance is still incredibly influential in Kara’s every professional move. With every story she files and every hurdle she tackles at her new reporting job, it’s easy to see the callback to Cat’s exit in Episode 2. Her goodbye was more than a little emotional — but it was also a call to action, for Kara to put herself out there and be bold with her career choices.

Hopefully when and if Cat does return to check on her protege, it will feel like she never really left at all.

It’s a little early to say that “Supergirl” has entirely recovered from losing Kara’s biggest female mentor, seeing as we’ve only gone about six episodes without seeing Cat. We’ll probably get a better idea of how terribly she’s missed when the season hits its stride in the back half. Without the distraction of new characters like Mon-El and Snapper Carr and of course the stunning Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin), we’ll probably get a better idea of how the dynamics within the main cast have shifted.

In the meantime, we’ll keep stalking the cast’s Instagram photos, hoping for Calista Flockhart to pop up in one of them and spoil Cat’s imminent return.

“Supergirl” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
