The Academy Awards broadcast Sunday evening (and into Monday morning) was the best in years. In fact, it was the best it could possibly be — given the circumstances. But it will never be a great show until the Academy decides who it is producing it for: its members or the general public. Of the 3 billion or so people who watched, I’m gonna guess not more than 11 civilians care about costume design or make up or art direction or cinematography.
