When Warner Brothers first green-lighted “Arizona Dream” in the early 1990s, it must’ve had Hollywood execs beaming. The film promised something for everyone: beautiful Johnny Depp for the teen and 20-something set; Academy Award-winning actress Faye Dunaway for the serious cinephile; and funnyman Jerry Lewis for comedy fans.
But wait. There’s more. Lili Taylor’s excellent sense of both character and timing. Beautiful desert scenes. Quirky imagery. Adventure.
But once those same execs actually saw the film Serbian director Emir Kusturica delivered, they panicked. How the hell were they supposed to market this goofy, lunatic ride? The myopic suits hacked the film down to two hours, put the kibosh on a wide release and only showed it at art houses in limited markets in 1993 and in DVD two years later.
