In a big win for Angelina Jolie,  a federal judge has found that her movie In the Land of Blood and Honey is not substantially similar to a Croatian journalist’s novel.

James Braddock had slapped The Lara Croft: Tomb Raider beauty with a lawsuit in 2011 that alleged Jolie’s film about a love affair during the Bosnian civil war violated his copyright on the book, The Soul Shattering.

LOS ANGELES — It wasn’t exactly a mighty victory, but “Jack the Giant Slayer” won the weekend at the box office.

The Warner Bros. 3-D action extravaganza, based on the Jack and the Beanstalk legend, made just $ 28 million to debut at No. 1, according to Sunday studio estimates. It had a reported budget of just under $ 200 million.

    NEW YORK — Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” led the box office with an opening of $ 84.8 million, a start better than the three previous “Lord of the Rings” films.

    Studio estimates Sunday had the Warner Bros. 3-D epic as the biggest December opening ever, surpassing Will Smith’s “I Am Legend,” which opened with $ 77.2 million in 2007.
