Taylor Swift’s Speak Now album — released worldwide on Monday — is on pace to sell a million copies in its first week of release, Billboard.com scooped on Wednesday.
The last album to go platinum in just one week was Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, which hit the ground running with 1,006,000 units sold in June 2008.
Taylor’s Speak Now, which reportedly features thinly-veiled diss tracks targeting Swift foes John Mayer, Kanye West, and Camilla Belle, is on track to score the biggest opening week of 2010, industry prognosticators say. So far, the title of best opening numbers of the year still belongs to Eminem — his Recovery album moved 741,000 copies when it debuted in July. Swift, however, is expected to easily surpass that total, according to projections. Speak Now will likely sell between 800,000 to 900,000 copies by week’s end — with platinum-selling status not out of reach — according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Speak Now is the third from the multi-award-wnning 20-year-old country starlet and the follow-up to Swift’s 2008 smash Fearless. That album debuted at No. 1 too, selling 592,000 when it arrived to the glee of thrilled Taylor fanatics two years ago. Fearless has sold 6 million copies to date.
Has anyone picked up Taylor’s new album yet? What do you think of it? Any songs popping out as early faves?
